High-Level Consultation on Water

Crossover Issues Week 3: Water, Food, & Energy NEXUS
The post 2015 water consultation has explored the need for development goals around water. The close interaction between water, energy and food - the nexus - also needs to be considered.  For example, deciding on increasing irrigation, affect flows for hydropower and water supply.  Water, energy and food security all rely on engineered infrastructure and technologies including dams, embankments, and wastewater systems, as well as nature-based infrastructure, including rivers, wetlands and forested hill slopes. . Projections show that in 2050 global population will have increased to 9 billion people and 70% more food will be needed. Over 70% of global water availability is used for agricultural production. Electricity generated from water, hydropower, provides 20% of the world's electricity and is the main energy source for more than 30 countries.

To address the competing water needs for the water, energy and food nexus means exploring opportunities to optimize water infrastructure and technology that will help shape and achieve the Post 2105 Development agenda.  We need to bridge the sectoral divide and have a vision that encompasses sustainable development which makes sure there is sufficient water for multiple uses without compromising the needs of other areas such as agriculture and energy. Join the discussion and share your ideas and solutions to the water-energy-food nexus!
