Celebrate Canada Water Week March 18 – 24!

WWF-CANADA BLOG

In Canada we’re used to clean flowing water. We turn on the tap and there it is. We even flush it down the toilet. It’s safe to wash up in, bathe in, and drink. But to many throughout the world clean water is a luxury. Nearly one billion people worldwide do not have access to clean drinking water and a further 2.6 billion have no basic sanitation system. Can you imagine spending most of your day just seeking out and carrying water back to your family?

By Megan Lorius, Gordon Foundation
This reality is highlighted in the latest work from The Water Brothers, Alex and Tyler Mifflin, who travelled with WaterCan to Africa, to see the global water crisis first-hand. In “No Woman, No Water” these young Ontario filmmakers highlight one of the most dire public health emergencies of our time. You can join The Water Brothers and Ben Mulroney, WaterCan National Ambassador, to watch this important short film and join in the discussion that follows as part of the TVO DocStudio Screening Series.

This series will also feature “Superfish: Bluefin Tuna” by marine biologist and wildlife cameraman Rick Rosenthal. Species extinction is a challenge the world over and with this documentary and the discussion to follow with Rick Rosenthal, the dangers of over-fishing will be explored.
If you’re interested in attending TVO’s DocStudio Screening Series on Wednesday, March 20, visit tvo.org/docstudioscreeningseries.
If you’re not able to attend, watch TVO throughout Canada Water Week for great water programs. From water use in the oil sands to rowing in the Arctic Ocean, TVO brings thought-provoking content to Ontarians looking to celebrate Canada Water Week!
And we know all of this interesting content will inspire the water lover in you! So head over to www.ILoveMyLake.ca to make a declaration, submit a YouTube video, or write a story showing your love for Canada’s amazing water ways.  Pledge to keep our lakes and rivers clean for humans and nature!
Canada Water Week (March 18 – 24, 2013) is an annual celebration held in conjunction with World Water Day (March 22). For the third year WWF has partnered with leading water organizations in Canada to encourage grass roots celebrations of the water ways that make our country great! This year, we’re pleased to partner with Living Lakes Canada, the Canadian Freshwater Alliance and the Walter and Duncan Gordon Foundation to raise awareness and provide opportunities for Canadians to support water initiatives. Check out the full list of events in Ontario at www.canadawaterweek.com.
